My name is Dayne Turner and martial arts has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. I started doing Tae Kwon Do when I was eight years old; I am now twenty-six and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.
On November 23, 2016, I will be stepping into the ring to box for Youth Empowerment Alliance, Inc. for the third time. Y.E.A. is a nonprofit organization that was started by my Tae Kwon Do school in 2012. The overarching goal is to provide the benefits of a martial arts program to any family in financial need.
It's no secret that martial arts has a positive effect on children, teens, and adults by giving them an outlet for their emotions, a place to learn discipline and respect, and also a friendly alternative to a conventional gym to get in shape. As a lifelong martial artist, I never felt the need to "prove" myself as a teenager, and therefore found it easy to resist temptation and peer pressure. I could go on and on about the benefits of martial arts, but that's not what this is about.
Y.E.A. has provided money to families with children that wanted a chance to compete on an International stage; the pride and happiness that comes with competing for your country is a privileged that everyone is not able to experience. Since being founded in 2012, Y.E.A. has helped to give over thirty competitors the chance to do just that.
But that's not all they want to do.
Y.E.A. wants to provide financial aid to families that cannot afford a Tae Kwon Do program, or even after school care. Tae Kwon Do provides a safe, disciplined, and productive atmosphere for children and teens to learn self discipline, self respect, and self confidence. Y.E.A. wants to give as many families an opportunity to reap these benefits as they possibly can.
I have stepped into the ring for this non-profit twice before, and as I prepare to do so a third time, I am just a fervent in my desire to see Y.E.A. do as much good in the community as they can.
